Feb 28, 2007We developed a MEL script that attaches locators to the uv crosspoints of an animated nurbs surface. the locators are attached throug animation along a path and keyed along the curve's parametric length. The idea is that the locator drives certain parameters of a primitive element. We are using this specifically in our class at Visualizing [DATA] at PRATT. |

Feb 04, 2007These are just some FLASH experiments we're working on with cellular automata. We're using simple live/ give birth / die rules to grow patterns. Lifespan, scale and transparency are random. As more generations go by, lifespan cycles, colors and distribution patterns begin to diverge. |

Dec 16, 2006Here are a few images from some of the final projects submitted by our students at PRATT in the Fall'06. The class was Digital Production Techniques and the main goal was to develop parametric systems. |

Aug 24, 2006This is basically the simplest parametric object we could design and produce. The MEL script allows you to create a table with different, width, height, number of legs, and radius of the legs. It does not place the legs based on any structural relationship, they are just placed randomly. This is a good example of the resolution of a design idea (a table whose surface becomes the legs) that is already initiated and then using the muscle of a computer to then produce multiple versions of that idea. The initial idea(high res) remains intact even though the configuration(low res) of the table changes substantially. |

May 16, 2006This is the result of an independent study Michael Szivos of SOFTlab and Jeffrey Taras and Ken Tracy of 4pli initiated while at the GSAPP. We are still working with 4pli on a proposal to use this system to create an installtion for an exhibit that will house the work of architects who are using similar automated parametric methods and CNC fabrication techniques. |

Nov 12, 2005This script was a big hit at Columbia as you can imagine. It takes a nurbs object (made of any number of surfaces as long as it is closed) and provides an interface for the user to customize the number of scetions in the x and z of a surface. The script then produces the sections and notches to produce the object based on a given thickness of the construction material. In the projects section you will find our in-house prototype(Waffle) and a shelving system(AMPle system). |
